TIPS FOR CLEANING OUT YOUR GARAGE

The garage is an area of the home especially prone to random piles of junk that just have no other place to go. Most people don’t consider the garage part of their “living space,” and therefore anything that goes there is out of sight & out of mind. Even if you use your garage for storage, maintaining organization will help you remember where everything is and use the space with efficiency. If your garage is too full to fit your vehicles when winter comes, it’s time for a cleanout!

Take Everything Out & Sort

Depending on how long it’s been since your last cleanout, your garage might be home to items you forgot you even owned. While this can mean sometimes help you find something useful, more often it means you don’t need many of these things anymore. Sort items into what you will keep, what is trash, and what can be donated. This stage of the cleanout may require multiple trips to a dump or the easier option of a junk removal service.

Thoroughly Clean the Space

Cleaning is different from organizing. If you separate only the items you want to keep, do you really want to put them back into the same dirty space? Before putting everything in its new dedicated place, you should clean the inside of your garage from top to bottom. The garage door & ceiling likely have cobwebs & dust collected, and the floor will need sweeping & possible mopping, depending on if anything has spilled. Don’t forget to wash the windows – Removing grime from the glass can bring more light into your garage!

Paint the Floor

Painting the floor of your garage is something you might want to consider if you appreciate a clean & updated look. Painted floors are easier to sweep & mop than unfinished cement, and they generally appear cleaner. A professional paint job will also act as a sealant layer, protecting your garage floor from cracking and sealing existing cracks from expanding further. Paint also makes the area look more like a living space, and this is a great option if you are thinking about putting gym equipment or a kids’ room into the garage.

Organize the Items You Keep

Be careful not to toss items back into the same shambled mess you started out with! Organize your garage according to logical sections. You might keep seasonal items in one area, and then sports equipment, camping materials, and tools in other parts. Shelving and hooks are incredibly useful for organizing items and still leaving room for vehicles in the garage. Ending the process with a newly organized space will make your garage cleanout worth the trouble!
